keeping busy; keeping warm

How do you keep your little one busy during the cold weather? We've had a few specific requests to address this topic, so we'd like to throw it out to the group. Here are a few ideas people have contributed -- please use the comments section to add your own! We'll highlight ideas in the next issue of the newsletter.

* The new Harris Teeter in Shirlington has 5 or 6 kid-sized shopping carts. Before about 11am the store is nearly empty, and we have taken advantage of the friendly employees and nearyby location to stretch our legs and restock our YoBaby on a few freezing mornings.

* Barcroft Center offers open play for $3 on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and they also have some classes for even the littlest kids. Tumbling classes have openings for kids as young as 10 months! See their website or stop in for class listings.

We go to the soft play area at Landmark Mall. The play area is great for the under 3 kids and not nearly as chaotic as the one at Tysons. You can also ride the train around the mall for $3, play on the "Reatrix" game on the floor, ride the stationary rides, and lunch at Chick Fil A. By then you've played for a good 2-3 hours, burned lots of energy, and spent about $25, which probably isn't enough to keep this mall alive for much longer (any mall that can run a large train through the halls is surely not doing well). You can also get away with spending zero and still burning lots of time and energy, as we did today, but you have to say NO a lot more!

Jenn says, "I love this topic and can't wait to see everyone's ideas. We think Harris Teeter is great and have stolen that idea many times. Here are some others:
- Soft play area at Landmark Mall. (Looks boring, but the kids love it.)
- Shirlington Library
- Borders or other bookstores often have story times and activities for the kids.
- Invite friends over for a playdate.

We've just discovered two more places to go I thought I would share. The REI near Bailey's Crossroads has a hiking rock to test your new boots on in the shoes area, which this baby enjoyed climbing on for at least 20 minutes. She also likes trying out the bikes, for you bigger kids. The store opens at 10 and is pretty empty on weekday mornings.

We also recently enjoyed an outing to Hudson Trail Outfitters in Pentagon Row. Not as much room to run around, but they had a small rock by the backpacks the kids could crawl on and a little water fountain thing right there that was repeatedly mentioned for the rest of the day.
